Read ‘Queen Sugar’ and join in this year’s One Book One Parish

One Book One Parish
In July, we asked you to vote for this year’s One Book One Parish selection, and the votes are in! You chose Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile. This October, we will read Queen Sugar and host programs at our libraries for the community-wide read.

One Book One Parish is a community-wide program during October designed to get Caddo Parish reading and talking about the same book. For our 2017 pick, we asked our patrons to vote among three selections, and the winner was Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile.

Set in Louisiana, this Southern novel follows Charley Bordelon and her daughter who move from California to Louisiana after she inherits a sugarcane farm from her father. Charley knows nothing about farming sugarcane and steps up to the challenges ahead of her while facing the troubles in her family’s past. The book is also the basis for the popular TV series on OWN.

We will be hosting a One Book One Parish Kick-Off Event on Saturday, September 30 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at our Hamilton/South Caddo Branch. Join us at this event for dramatic readings from the novel!

We will also be hosting book clubs at various branches to discuss the novel throughout October. We will have these at the following libraries:
  • Hamilton/South Caddo Branch – Wednesday, October 18 at 5:30 p.m. (Facebook Event)
  • Broadmoor Branch – Thursday, October 19 at 10 a.m. (Facebook Event)
  • David Raines Branch – Thursday, October 19 at 4 p.m. (Facebook Event)
  • Means Branch – Friday, October 20 at noon (Facebook Event)
  • Cedar Grove/Line Ave. Branch – Monday, October 23 at 5 p.m. (Facebook Event)
Queen Sugar book talks will be held at the Main Branch on Saturday, October 21 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch on Wednesday, October 25 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Borrow Queen Sugar and get reading so you will be ready for October! We will have the book at all of our libraries. You can find it in the catalog and put a hold on it. It is also available as an e-book and audiobook on Overdrive or as an audiobook on Hoopla.
