Celebrate Black History Month at Shreve Memorial Library!

Black History Month
February is Black History Month, and we are planning a lot of special programs at our branches honoring African American history. We are hosting events for you to test your knowledge of Black History, learn more about African Americans in Times of War, and to find your roots.

The theme for this year’s Black History Month is African Americans in Times of War. Our Genealogy Department is visiting multiple branches to present a special program highlighting local Caddo Parish veterans and their service during World War I. You can find information about that program here.

Our David Raines Branch is hosting a Black History Affair on Saturday, February 10 at 2 p.m. and has two opportunities for you to play Black History Trivial Pursuit (February 12 and February 26); call the branch at 318-222-0824 for more information.

On Thursday, February 15, the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, along with guest speaker James Demery, Retired SFC and Caddo Parish educator, will present “African Americans in Today’s Military.” The program for teens begins at 4 p.m. and will detail the experiences of African Americans in today’s military.

Our Mooretown Branch will host a special Black History Month program on African Americans in Times of War on Saturday, February 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Caddo Parish Educator Darryl Gates will present a program highlighting African Americans in times of war, both past and present. He’ll be joined by local musicians and pastors to honor Black History Month.

You will also have an opportunity to discover your roots with a Black History program presented by our Genealogy Department. They will host an African American Genealogy Class on Saturday, February 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Broadmoor Branch.

We hope you are able to join us this month at a branch of Shreve Memorial Library to recognize and celebrate Black History Month.
