Children & Families Invited to Join the African American Read-In at SML

Shreve Memorial Library is inviting children and families to join the African American Read-In this month as part of the library’s Black History Month celebration. Created in 1990, the African American Read-In is the nation’s first and oldest event dedicated to diversity in literature. Now through February 29, Shreve Memorial Library patrons can join the African American Read-In by visiting library branches for special storytime programs or by checking out books by and about African American authors, characters, and culture.

The National African American Read-In was created by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. Since its creation, the African American Read-In has reached more than 6 million participants worldwide, engaging communities to read together and celebrate African American books and authors. Each February, schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens host events such as book discussions, book club meetings, public readings, and media presentations as part of the event.

At Shreve Memorial Library, library branches will host African American Read-In storytime programs, highlighting books written by African American authors and celebrating African American culture and history. Storytime programs will feature engaging stories, songs, and activities for children, as well as a corresponding craft to accompany the themes discussed. Storytime programs are designed for children under age 11; however, parents and children of all ages are welcome to attend. All storytime programs are free and open to the public.

African American Read-In storytime programs will take place during the month of February at Shreve Memorial Library branches throughout Caddo Parish. Weekly storytime programs will take place at the Mooretown, North Caddo, and Mooringsport Branches, while other library branches will schedule special African American Read-In storytime events on specific dates and times in February. A complete schedule of African American Read-In storytime events at Shreve Memorial Library is included below and available online at www.shreve-lib.org.

In addition to storytime programs, the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch will host a special poetry-themed African American Read-In event on Monday, February 12. The Poetry Read-In is designed to encourage literacy and public speaking amongst children. Children will be able to read and listen to poetry written and inspired by African Americans, as well as recite their own poetry. The program will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, located at 2105 Hollywood Avenue.
