Updates:

The Downtown Branch is estimated to be reopened sometime in 2026. Stay tuned for more updates as we get them. Below is a timeline of events.

Timeline

• March 2026:

  • Roof project completed 3/17/26.

• September 2025:

  • Roof replacement has been completed.

• July 2025:

  • Existing clay tile installation is nearly completed on the last remaining alley side. The last of the existing clay tiles will be installed, then the work will stop to wait on the shipment of the new clay tiles. Plumbing, deck repair also occurred. 
    
    

• June 2025:

  • The scaffolding is currently installed on 3 sides of the building – Texas Street, Marshall Street and the alley. Since the last site visit, the roofers have continued installing clay field tiles on the Marshall Street side, which is about 85% completed.

• May 2025:

  • Since the last site visit, the roofers have continued working on the Marshall Street side - completing the underlayment installation, installing the nailers, covering the nailers with underlayment and installing clay field tiles.

  • Clay field tile installation on the Marshall Street side was about 5% - 10% completed.

  • Clay field tile installation on the overall project stands at just over 50% completed.
    

• April 2025:

  • All clay tiles on the east roof have been installed. On the south, 75% of the existing clay tiles have been removed.

• February 2025:

  • Scaffolding added to exterior of the building. Roof tile replacement has begun

• January 2025:

  • Asbestos remediation completed; Work on a new roof drainage system; Work on the central part of the roof; Collections moved to a new warehouse that is closer to the Main Branch while local history and newspaper collections remain in a climate controlled storage.

• December 2024

  • Met to discuss routing of the new roof drain piping
     

• September 2024 

  • HVAC upgrades; Asbestos remediation; Work on roof and basement; Work on flooring.
    

• August 2024:

  • Removed clay tiles for color samples 
    
    
    

• March 2024:

  • Work on Elevators and basement floors.

• February 2024:

  • Upgrades to fire suppression system.

• January 2024:

  • Asbestos tile remediation; HVAC upgrades; Refinishing of basement floors begin; Elevator upgrades begin.

• December 2023:

  • More asbestos tile remediation work.

• November 2023:

  • Asbestos tile remediation work begins.

• October 2023:

  • Removal of materials and equipment from areas scheduled for asbestos tile remediation.

• September 2023:

  • initial facility remediation work complete.

• August 2023:

  • Facility remediation work; HVAC repairs.

• July 2023:

  • Facility remediation work ongoing; removal of primary library collections to offsite storage complete. 

• June 2023:

  • Facility remediation work; Collection damage assessments and remediation work complete. 

• May 2023:

  • Building/Facility remediation work; collection damage assessments and remediation; Library equipment/ workstation removal complete; Library staff assigned to other locations.

• April 2023:

  • Remediation and recovery work begins.

• June 2022:

  • Downtown Branch closes to public for renovations.
