Plans are currently underway for the Shreve Memorial Library Children’s Book Festival to be held Saturday, May 2 on the beautiful campus of LSU Shreveport. The literary event will feature famed children’s authors, local authors and illustrators of children’s books, fun games and activities for kids, and delicious food. Local children’s authors, illustrators and community groups are invited to be a part of the festivities.

Local authors and illustrators are encouraged and invited to participate in the Children’s Book Festival by reserving a 10’x10’ booth space to promote and sell their works and publications. Booth spaces are available for $25 each and include listing in the Children’s Book Festival Guide, table and chairs. Those interested in being a part of the festival are asked to contact Emily Horan at (318) 226-4980 or by emailing ehoran@shreve-lib.org.

Community groups, organizations and businesses are invited to join Shreve Memorial Library in Literacy Lane, a special area of the Children’s Book Festival where community partners will come together to promote a love of reading and lifelong learning in a fun, interactive way. Organizations are encouraged to sign up for a free booth space to provide a FREE activity or game for children and festival attendees. The Shreve Memorial Library Children’s Book Festival, presented in memory of John Tuggle, is set for Saturday, May 2 with an all-star lineup of children’s book authors and illustrators. The festival will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the campus of LSU Shreveport. Admission to the festival is free. Festivalgoers will be able to meet children’s authors up close and in person at festival tents, have their books autographed, and see each author bring their stories to life on stage. Featured authors for the event include:

• Lincoln Peirce, cartoonist and creator of the Big Nate comic strip and author and illustrator of the New York Times bestselling novel series Big Nate and Max & the Midknights.
• Shauna J. Grant, cartoonist and creator of the early reader graphic novel Mimi series and Karen’s Prize: A Graphic Novel and Karen’s Surprise: A Graphic Novel, both part of the Baby-sitters Little Sisters graphic novel series.
• Stacy McAnulty, former mechanical engineer turned award-winning children’s book author of more than forty published books including The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl and the Our Universe series.
• Tad Hills, #1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of the Rocket and Duck & Goose picture book series.

Shreve Memorial Library branches are celebrating Women’s History Month with programs highlighting women who are leading change. The 2026 Women’s History Month theme, “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future” recognizes the diverse contributions of women who are leading sustainability efforts across environmental, economic, educational, and social justice movements. Now through the end of March, Shreve Memorial Library programs will celebrate women who have made a lasting impact on their families, communities, and history. Programs include special presentations, film screenings, discussions, arts and crafts, and trivia programs. All programs are free and open to the public.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Shreve Memorial Library’s Genealogy Department will hold a special presentation on how to find the sometimes-hidden half of one’s family tree, recognizing that finding information on the women in your family can be challenging. The program will discuss tips and techniques to aid in researching family history, and will take place on Wednesday, March 18 at 11:00 a.m. at the Broadmoor Branch, which is located at 1212 Captain Shreve Drive.

On Tuesday, March 24, the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch will welcome guest speaker, Katrina Worsham, for a special Women’s History Month program. During the program, Worsham will share her journey as a woman leading change and her many accomplishments achieved throughout her lengthy career as a State Farm Insurance Agent in Shreveport. The program is open to library patrons ages 19 and older and will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, located at 2105 Hollywood Avenue.

The YWCA of Northwest Louisiana, in partnership with the Cedar Grove-Line Avenue Branch (located at 8303 Line Avenue), will host “Little Known Women of Shreveport History” on Thursday, March 26 at 12:00 p.m. Led by Dr. Gary Joiner, LSUS Professor of History, and Abigail Boykin, LSUS History Student, the program will discuss how women were instrumental in the early years of Shreveport’s development and growth, although many of these women remain virtually unknown. During the presentation, audiences will hear their stories, learn their names, and be inspired by their courage, tenacity and strength, often against many odds and barriers. In addition to these special presentations, library patrons will be inspired by the lives of women throughout history at special discussions and film screening events. In Oil City, library patrons are invited to share their memories of influential women while having a cup of coffee or tea at the branch on Tuesday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m., and then join the Oil City Branch staff for the Literacy Ladies Book Club discussion on Thursday, March 26 at 3:00 p.m. Both events will take place at the Oil City Branch, located at 102 Allen Street in Oil City. Library patrons can also visit the Higginbotham-Bryson Branch, located at 9359 Greenwood Road in Greenwood, for a Women’s History Month coffee and conversation event on Friday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m.

Film screenings will take place at the Hamilton/South Caddo, Atkins, and Hosston Branches of Shreve Memorial Library. On Tuesday, March 24, the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, located at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, will hold a screening of the Peabody Award-winning film Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed at 5:30 p.m. The film follows the historic presidential campaign of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first to run for presidential office. The Atkins Branch will host “Women Who Inspire: Cinema + Crafts” on Wednesday, March 25. The program will include a screening of a Women’s History Month feature film, and a guided craft activity designed to reflect strength, resilience, and self-expression. The program will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Atkins Branch, located at 3704 Greenwood Road. In Hosston, library patrons can enjoy screenings of the movie Hidden Figures on Wednesday, March 30 starting at 10:00 a.m. Drawing inspiration from the women who broke barriers at NASA, library patrons are also invited to complete a vision board activity after the viewing. The Hosston Branch is located at 15478 U.S. Highway 71 in Hosston.

Library patrons can also participate in a vision boarding session inspired by Women’s History Month at the Mooretown Branch on Tuesday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m. Patrons will create vision boards using a variety of materials and quotes from inspiring women and then participate in an interactive discussion exploring topics such as barriers women face, most inspirational woman in your life, and more. The Mooretown Branch is located at 4360 Hollywood Avenue.

Additionally, library patrons will draw inspiration from women in history to complete a number of other craft projects. On Tuesday, March 17, the Wallette Branch invites patrons to create their own diva head using a wooden frame silhouette with assorted fabrics and beads at the branch, located at 363 Hearne Avenue, at 3:00 p.m. Patrons will design a glamorous, diva-inspired charger plate at the David Raines Branch, located at 2855 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, on Thursday, March 19 at 10:00 a.m., while patrons at the Belcher-Wyche Branch, located at 409 Charles Street in Belcher, will learn the art of old-fashioned cross stitch embroidery on Tuesday, March 24 at 4:30 p.m. In Blanchard, library patrons can visit the branch at any time during the month of March to participate in a variety of craft and coloring projects celebrating influential women, both past and present. The Blanchard Branch is located at 344 Alexander Street in Blanchard.

The North Shreveport and West Shreveport Branches will test patrons’ knowledge of women’s history with interactive game play. On Thursday, March 26, patrons at the North Shreveport Branch will play a game of “Celebrate HER Bingo” beginning at 10:30 a.m. The program will take place at the North Shreveport Branch, located at 4844 North Market Street, and registration is required. At the West Shreveport Branch, library visitors are invited to go on a Women’s History Month mystery adventure in “Uncovered” on Tuesday, March 31. History, trivia, and a game or two will take patrons on an adventure through the library to uncover the legacies of influential women in history. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m. at the West Shreveport Branch, located at 4380 Pines Road.

Children are invited to travel the globe at Shreve Memorial Library and “Read Around the World,” as the library hosts a series of multicultural storytime programs, inspiring all to travel around the world through the pages of picture books set in various countries across the globe. Throughout the month of March, children and their families are encouraged to visit the library for fun, engaging and interactive storytime programs featuring stories of diverse cultures, unique characters and faraway places. Programs will take place at Shreve Memorial Library branches throughout Caddo Parish, and all programs are free and open to the public.

“Read Around the World” programs at Shreve Memorial Library will feature a selection of titles and activities exploring various cultures and countries. Children will learn about Japan’s bicycle food deliverers in Kyo Maclear’s Noodles on a Bicycle, explore the mesmerizing wonders of a Nigerian night market in Seina Wedleck’s The Night Market, and discover the history of traditional homelands of Indigenous nations in This Land by Ashley Fairbanks, as well as travel to far off places such as China, Palestine, Trinidad and Tobago, Italy, France and more through the pages of storybooks.

Children will have multiple opportunities to read around the world and enjoy stories of distant places at a number of interactive storytime programs. Storytime programs include engaging storytelling, interactive play, hands-on crafts, singing and lots of fun. While storytime programs are designed for early learners and children ages 0 – 5, children of all ages are welcome to attend.

“Read Around the World” storytime programs will be held each Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at the North Caddo Branch, 615 N. Pine Street in Vivian; each Thursday at 4:00 p.m. at the Belcher-Wyche Branch, 409 Charles Street in Belcher; and every Friday at 12:00 p.m. at the Mooringsport Branch, 603 Latimer Street in Mooringsport. Shreve Memorial Library is offering tax filing assistance for library patrons as part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, an IRS initiative that supports free tax preparation service for the underserved through partner organizations. Volunteers will be available at the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch each Wednesday through April 8 to help patrons prepare their tax returns. The service is free and available to all individuals with incomes below $51,000.

Tax-filing assistance will take place each Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Tech Center of the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch, located at 2111 Bert Kouns Industrial Loop. Appointments are required and can be scheduled in person at the branch or by calling (318) 687-6824.

IRS Volunteers will be available to provide facilitated self-assistance (FSA), in which participants will prepare their own tax returns with help from a tax coach and free online software. Volunteers will not complete tax returns, but instead guide users through the online filing process.

Patrons will need to bring the following documents to complete their tax preparation: valid unexpired government photo ID, Social Security card or ITIN Letter, last year’s tax return showing AGI, as well as all W2s, 1099s, 1098s, 1095s and 1095A documents. In addition, participants must have their bank account information and routing number for direct deposit as no paper checks will be issued this year. Participants will also need to have an active email address and a flashdrive to save their tax returns digitally. Those wishing to print their returns may do so at a cost of $0.10 per page.

The VITA Tax Filing Assistance Program will continue through Wednesday, April 8, 2026.

Shreve Memorial Library Rodessa Branch will be closed to the public effective Friday, January 2. The closure comes as a result of ongoing maintenance issues. The branch, located at 10093 Main Street in Rodessa, will remain closed until further notice as maintenance concerns are addressed and structural damage is assessed.

While the branch is closed, patrons of the Rodessa Branch are encouraged to use the Means or North Caddo Branches of Shreve Memorial Library. The Means Branch is located at 7016 Magnolia Lane in Ida and is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The North Caddo Branch is located at 615 N. Pine Street in Vivian and is open Monday through Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

In addition, library patrons can access the library’s e-branch at any time for access to the library’s digital resources or visit any of Shreve Memorial Library’s other branches. LSU Health Shreveport and Shreve Memorial Library are working together to bring valuable healthcare information to residents of Caddo Parish. Beginning Thursday, August 7, LSU Health Shreveport Librarians will visit Shreve Memorial Library branches throughout Caddo Parish to lead “Fact-Checking Health Information: Tools You Can Use” information sessions designed to help citizens navigate the overwhelming field of healthcare information. Sessions will be held monthly through April 2026, and all sessions are free and open to the public.

Understanding healthcare information can be confusing and overwhelming. “Fact-Checking Health Information: Tools You Can Use” will provide essential discussions on the importance of fact-checking health information to empower attendees to make informed decisions about their health. The sessions will also provide practical tools, tips and techniques to find reliable information on health-related topics such as medications and symptoms. Participants will learn to use tools such as the NIH Know the Science website, how to determine real information from fake information, and about the trusted resources for health information provided by Shreve Memorial Library.

Each session will last approximately one hour. Registration is not required to attend. Sessions are scheduled as follows:

“Fact-Checking Health Information: Tools You Can Use” is a collaborative effort between LSU Health Shreveport Library and Shreve Memorial Library. 

Shreve Memorial Library is excited to announce a program to encourage early children’s literacy. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten will let patrons keep track of how many books their children read. The goal of the program is to read to your child every day and reach 1000 books before your child enters kindergarten.1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading program for infants through preschoolers and their families. Reading is a vital part of everyday life and learning for your child. This program will help you kick start your child’s education and teach them a love of words, reading, and books.Quality time with your child is also important to their education. By pledging to read regularly with your child, you will have many opportunities to bond as you reach 1000 books before kindergarten!

How the Program Works:

• Register your child for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten by visiting our Beanstack site. (You can also visit any branch of our library and staff will help you sign up.)
• Read to your child every day and use the Reading Log in Beanstack to keep track of the books they read.
• Visit the library often for more books to borrow. Your child will receive a sticker for every 100 books and a certificate for every 200 books.
• Once your child reaches 1000 books, they will receive a certificate of completion and a book to keep!

By participating in the program, you will be helping your child develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime.1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a national nonprofit initiative that seeks to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers, as well as encourage parent and child bonding through reading.

We have teamed up with Sci-Port to offer the Shreve Memorial Library Sci-Port Pass to library cardholders. With this program, patrons can check out a pass to Sci-Port and visit the recently reopened science museum in downtown Shreveport. The pass allows access to all of Sci-Port’s regular programming and exhibits.

You will need a Shreve Memorial library card to borrow the Sci-Port pass. The library pass is good for four people, and patrons can keep the pass for seven days before returning it to the library. Once you check out the pass, you will need to show it at the admissions desk at Sci-Port to get into the museum. After you use the pass, you can return it to any branch of Shreve Memorial Library.
